The following photos are all found on Tumblr when you search the tags “depression” or “suicide.” If you search the link on the bottom of each photo you will find the Tumblr where the photo was posted. I picked these 10 photos because they demonstrate the feelings of complete hopelessness and loneliness. The most shocking factor for me was the fact that every photo posted had at least 10 reblogs, meaning, a person posted the photo and at least 10 other people posted the photo to their own blog. According to Depression Perception, the United States has an estimated 18.5 million adults ages 18 and over with a depressive disorder. These photos are a testament that the journey of depression can be self destructive and foster startling behavior. When I searched through different blogs, reading people’s posts about their life with depression, a over whelming feeling of sheer sadness ripped through me. Most felt like they had nowhere to turn. One blog in particular had numerous posts regarding her feelings of complete loss. She stated, “I can’t think positive no matter how hard I try, the negative thoughts keep coming back. I keep cutting. I’m honestly just so damn tired of trying. I don’t know what to do anymore. My sister doesn’t answer my texts for help anymore, my dad get’s frustrated and yells. I’m suffering so much and I’m invisible here now.” Depression is a mental disorder that impacts millions and many still remain alone as a victim of depression. As a community we need to begin to offer a greater sense of support. The feeling that no one cares enough to support someone in the midst of a depressive state is disheartening in itself. For whatever reason, if you think you know someone who could be battling depression don’t let them go at it alone. Lend a hand, an ear, a shoulder to cry on. Anything to let them know somewhere out there someone cares.
